Kitzbuhel to Reith via Schwarzsee - Austria 9 Aug 2012.

Kitzbuhel to Reith via Schwarzsee and Return
Austria
Distance 14km
Thursday 9th August 2012

Last year we had stayed in Kitzbuhel for a week and had quickly realised a week would not be long enough so we had decided that this year we would come back for two weeks.  When looking for a place to stay we remembered everyone we spoke to last year said the Hotel Edelweiss was the best place to stay, Anne found this was also said on Trip Advisor and so we booked to stay at the Hotel Edelweiss.

We had arrived in Kitzbuhel late the previous evening and some of us were looking for an easy walk to begin with.  Veronika suggested an easy walk out by Schwarzsee and over towards Oberndorf or Reith.  Veronika and Klaus take a real interest in where you are walking and take a real pleasure in recommending routes or places of interest to call in or look at.  So with packed lunches in my bag and a borrowed map from Veronika we set off.  We headed North through the town and moved North East to the Schwarzsee lake.  Today there was not many people swimming in the lake unlike last year, every time we came along by the lake we found hundreds were either swimming, boating, cycling or just walking around the lake.  I even had a couple of swims myself, even though the lake was full of eels.

We moved to the South of Schwarzsee then along the Western side to the North.  They are plenty of paths we could follow but we headed East to Ober-haus where we had a drink next to a small shrine.

Kitzbuheler Horn and Wilder Hag

To the East as always we could see the Kitzbuheler Horn, it would be a couple of days before I would get the chance to go up there.

We then moved North and North West towards Gieringer Weiher, it was along here Anne spotted our first and as it happened our only deer sighting of the holiday.

We walked across the North end of Gieringer Weiher, it looked a good place to stop but we moved on and had our packed lunches a little further North.  It was here we decided that we would go to Reith rather than Oberndorf, via Rettenberg 876m which has a panoramic view.

After a short stop at the Rettenberg view point we we moved South East into Reith, where we had a drink, after all we were on our holidays.

We returned back to Kitzbuhel following the route that takes you through the golf course and follows the train line back to Schwarzsee.

The path then leads you to Kitzbuhel and we returned back at the Hotel Edelweiss in time for tea and cake, part of the facilities of the hotel.

In all we had covered approx 14km at an easy relaxed pace.
